MJ Soft 90mm f/2.8 — Soft Focus Lens for Leica

A rangefinder-coupled soft focus lens for Leica, in two versions: uncoated for the older look, coated for a cleaner one.

Soft focus lenses are usually either very expensive or very difficult to focus. This one is neither. Because it couples to the Leica rangefinder, you focus it as you would any other lens — which matters a great deal with a lens whose image is soft by design.

The flare it produces is the point of the lens, and it is beautiful.

Two versions

• MJ Soft 90mm f/2.8 — uncoated, for a classical rendering with real character
• MJ Soft 90mm f/2.8 ver.2 — coated

Both draw well; which you prefer is a matter of what you want from the picture.

How it mounts

• Leica screw and M bodies — remove the front element of an Elmar 90mm and fit the MJ Soft in its place, or use it through a Visoflex.
• Leicaflex and R bodies — through a Leica extension ring.

Helicoid Unit H-90 set

We made the H-90 so that the lens can be used without sacrificing an Elmar barrel. With it, the MJ Soft becomes a rangefinder-coupled Leica lens in its own right.

The Leica extension ring included in the set also allows it to be used as an M42 lens for close-up work, and with a mount adapter it will go on an SLR — so the same lens covers portraits through to landscape.

The H-90 has no diaphragm. Use a 39 mm ND filter, or one of the aperture units below.

Accessories

ND X4 filter. Made for the MJ Soft, 39 mm, and usable on other Leica lenses. Supplied new with case, original box and instructions.

Aperture units f/5.6 and f/11. They screw into the front of the lens, giving a working aperture where the lens itself has none.
